Crónica del Reverence Valada Festival 2016

reverence-valada-2016

808 GONDOMAR: Para calentar, Rock gritón y divertido.

Lisergia pura.

THE RAVEONETTES: Estuvieron muy divertidos…

the-brian-jonestown-massacre-reverence-valada-2016

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS: El ruido.

THE DAMNED: Dave Vanian, amo absoluto. Qué clase, qué voz, qué saber estar, qué savoir faire, qué se yo qué decirte. Neat Neat Neat.

Ya puedo descansar contento, ya he visto a THE SISTERS OF MERCY y me han gustado totalmente.

RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON: Abrasión instrumental y dronismo perverso, me dejó sin fuerzas y agotado después de tres días de festival.

English version:

Another year more, Another Reverence Valada Festival down my throat. What’s a tradition for this humble servant is turning into the most authentic meeting of Southern Europe in terms of rock festivals. With a truly varied proposal that went from the Shoegazing of LSD & THE SEARCH OF GOD to the lysergic Doom of WITH THE DEAD, this one is about an audience that attends for the sake of listening to music first and foremost and then having a good time, in that order.

Everyone knows the philosophies of massive festivals in which maximum profit and getting the dough with drink and food of the lowest quality line-ups that faulter at the every step of the way, and crowds that know next to nothing of the bands they’re suposed to be watching. So finding a place for 60 euros, close to he majestic Texo River with incomparable views and bands that fulfill their promise like this one is nearly impossible to equal. Add to that, cheap booze and food of good quality and it’s the perfect combination.

In addition to that, there have been some changes in the layout since last year’s edition. The Football field that served as the main Stage has turned into the entrance of the festival, and one of the lesser ones has been upsized, changing the distribution but keeping the nice and warm vibe of the place with the imposing Texo River and the wood protecting the crowd. The DJ and press zone has been combined to turn into a third stage in which Portuguese bands can show their chops. Although, with so many offers in the main stages it was quite impossible to pay attention to that one, I’m sorry to admit.

Thursday September the 8th

The first day always comes as the warming-up day for this meeting. Local and “minor” bands in 2016 finally turned into a big surprise with an atomic and ultrafast perfomance by Thee Oh Sees and an astonishing and some danceable garage noiserock fest by JC Satán that along Flavor Crystals and Blaak Heat stunned us all.

808 GONDOMAR: To heat us up, Shouty and harmless fun rock.

SUN MAMMUTH: The proper moment to place ourselves, recall the beauty of the place and the atmosphere and recognise the multiple changes of this Third Edition. We heard the thundering roar ot the Stoner rock of SUN MAMMUTH.

FLAVOR CRYSTALS: Psychgaze of the highest order, the festival begins in earnest. Whatever this means in terms of atmosphere, ambience and good vibes gets together in this gig. We’ve have finally arrived.

J.C. SATÁN: They blow stages away. What a singer they have. Here come the youngsters. After listening to them in record and resembling like a mirror to every other neo garaje noise band of the last years, they just shut my mouth up with a tremendous perfomance. Dynamic, funny, danceable, perfect for the end of the sunlight.

THEE OH SEES: Ultra high speed, all the time. The crowd went so wild, that I nearly got my nose broken from the typical elbowhigh arsehole. Never in my 25 years experience in slam music gigs had I suffered such a blow in the face. Didn’t know I had so much blood in me. Nevertheless, they were perfect with Mr Dwyer commanding them with his under the armpit guitar posture.

thee-oh-sees-reverence-valada-2016

With a slight hangover, we got to the festival with the three stages in full mode. It seems that the hit in my nose is not to be worried about after all.

Friday September the 9th

LSD & THE SEARCH FOR GOD: A bad time for them, not that many people and the sound didn’t do them any justice: Too high souding vocals with a buried guitar contradicted my expectations of a shoegazing gig.

PAPIR MEETS DOCTOR SPACE: Another twist for the Papermoon Sessions as SULA BASSANA was absent and Doctor Space from the ORESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE helped things out. Just perfect for the time of the day with the musical prowess of PAPIR and the space ondulations courtesy of Doctor Space… It’s such a pleasure to watch these deceptively young musicians playing like authentic geniuses with the modest attitude of a beginner. Psych, with a stoner undertone.

papir-meets-doctor-space-reverence-valada-2016

papir-meets-doctor-space-reverence-valada-2016

YAWNING MAN: In a quartet mode, with the incorporation of a second guitarrist, and a vocal moment by Mr Lalli...following the sonic path of PAPIR, a more personal desert Rock a little less dynamic. They keep on being legends in their own terms. Doctor Space again added the exact dose of spatiality and made the gig more entertaining and less narcotic than usual.

yawning-man-reverence-valada-2016

DEAD MEADOW: Although it’s about time for them to release new music, We never get tired of their crawling and snakish blues and the quality of the musicians therein. A band that delivers in spades throughout their long career with big songs surrounded with a stoner dust swampy vibe. Pure lysergy.

dead-meadow-reverence-valada-2016-3

dead-meadow-reverence-valada-2016

THE RAVEONETTES Very entertaining, in the vein of JC Satán but less demoniac and abrassive and more decadently classy with that THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN vibe. Perfect for warming us up for the inminet arrival of…

the-raveonettes-reverence-valada-2016

THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE: To begin with, impeccable, all hits. In second thoughts maybe a little tired-looking and a woth again a deceptively very short set (This festival is all full of enjoyable deceptions). It seems that evenso, they surpassed the time limit imposed by festival constrictions, so there’s not much to complain about. Anton looked a little bit wearier than usual, but left his band’s neo psychgazepoprock speak for itself. Sure it did.

the-brian-jonestown-massacre-reverence-valada-2016

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS: The noise. Pieces of guitar everywhere. Good songs, but melody exited form the great door as did parts of instruments as soon as they began. Sonic terrorists that turned everything into an upheaval. an utter pleasure.

From that moment on, everything turned into a maremagnum of bands and sounds and I must confess that at some point I didn’t know if I was watching OZRIC TENTACLES (it seems they played a three hour set) or JAPANESE GIRL, while dusk dissolved in the ether of dawn and I ran away to the hotel before the beginning of a new day consumed me.

We arrived the last day, with that end of the festival fear that grips you when you enjoy something so much and with uncertainty of the cancellation of the flakey Killing Joke and the black legend of The Sisters Of Mercy when they play live.

Saturday September the 10th

PAPIR: Without Doctor Space’s help, it was their turn to defend their worth in a power trio format, and hell they did. Tremendously floatable, atmospheric and with a grace and flow, very hard to equal. Although this was after two days of gigs and the strength and capacity of concentration was disappearing, they always managed to draw us back to that wrapping net of soft/dense guitar licks, bass guitar rhythms and drumming so frisky it was unquenchable.

CULT OF DOM KELLER : I arrived late and they were already powerful with that disdain/Stiff Upper Lip brithish atitude that I was sorely missing with such a shortage of british bands. An utter delight that is shouting for a proper tour in the Iberian Peninsula as headliners.

NIK TURNER'S NEW SPACE RITUAl: We were told it was his third show (so unaware of that). Like HAWKWIND, but in slow motion. And a dancer (no such a visionary as Staccia). It was however an absolute pleasure to listen to their version of Brainstorm, hypnotic and spatial as it could ever been wished as well as Orgon Accumulator. Exceedingly more gratifying than Brock’s.

THE DAMNED: Dave Vanian, Pure master. Such class, knowhow, savoir faire, can’t explain.

Neat Neat Neat. An absolute lesson in every sense.

THE SISTERS OF MERCY: Fourth time for me, a little bit nervewracking, at last in a stage the same size as the legend of Mr Eldritch, his croon eroded but still imposing. Marian, First and Last, Corrosion, Dominion, Alice, Temple Of Love, More, Crash And Burn/Summer (these two new songs he has never released) like being blown with a ball...I can finally rest with a smile knowing I enjoyed a Sisters Of Mercy show entirely.

RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON: Instrumental abrassion and perverse droning left me powerless and wasted after 3 days of festival.

MARS RED SKY: Crawling I managed to get to watch the final gig of the festival (at least for me). A combination of good company and amazing low-end rumble by the band made me forget how pedestrian their Stoner-rock sounds on record. Another mouth-shutter. full of doomy moments.

GREAT LOSSES: WITH THE DEAD: people in general were happy with it, but since I love to speak with bands and to have a long chat with Papir was worth the loss, well I missed it. Not everything in a festival is about being glued to the stage.

As a coda, as well as the good vibes, the crowd with good judgement and will to enjoy music and Portugal as an unbeatable place to do it, something that left me with a specially good taste in the mouth is to watch someone with 78 years like Nik Turner having so much fun onstage. A lesson in life.

I have to thank everyone in the organization (Nick and Jason and everybody else) that helped me, my radio program and the website i write for, for allowing my humble self get there as well as all the friends that came with and along me: Kirill, Idoia, Leire, Miguel, Raquel, Miguel (Galicia), Warren, Edorta, Ana... and all the new ones that I met: Especially Nenad and Ildiko who took me to and fro the hostel and accompanied me with such a uplifting attitude, also Adam, Jules and Sara. Thanx to all for making this the best festival again.
